Hello Dear Collective. » intimate. bold. eclectic.

Harmonious bonds.

After we’re born, some of us are lucky enough to have passenger soul mates join in our life’s journeys. These said companions become our biggest source of continuity in that their existence serves as the longest relationships most of us ever experience in our lifetime. Siblings reinforce our family values, offer compassionate shoulders to lean on and undeniably teach us the finer points of competitive rivalry.

Kaylee is as energetic as any toddler of two; eager to explore her surroundings behind two inquisitive blue peepers, ready and willing to put her legs in motion. Just weeks ago she seized to be a singleton as her family welcomed tranquil Cameron and instantaneously joined that infamous Big Sister club. As much of a nuisance as little siblings can initially be, Kaylee’s impulsive sudden prods were no match for delightful Cameron who continued to relax, remarkably unperturbed.

Mom worked diligently for just one portrait featuring the conception of that magical bond between a sister and her newly created little brother. Optimistic, we frequently invited young Kaylee to spend a moment admiring her brand new baby yet she was quick to scurry in reverse. Undoubtedly, sibling relationships eventually blossom and evolve with time; admittedly, it comes as no surprise that most introductory stages are often rocky.

Pleasantly precocious this little beauty made me work intensely for her attention. Time and again I would admire how the light fell seamlessly upon her threadlike flaxen hair as mom stood nearby cradling baby Cameron, who was ever so patient for his sister’s return and their composed moment. Given the numerous distractions surrounding us [free roaming peacocks, untouched playground equipment, gallivanting horses and an unpopulated petting zoo] Kaylee astoundingly hadn’t become engrossed by their presence nevertheless continued to play cat-and-mouse with me and my camera.

Fortunately, on rare occasions Miss Kaylee would delightfully come to find that quiet pocket she shared with her brother only to exchange fleeting signs of affection. Whether it encompassed a gentle soothing pat on the small of his back or a hasty kiss on Cameron’s hairless head, she decidedly and energetically nurtured like a responsible big sister is inclined to do.

I’m a firstborn of three, thus Kaylee’s interactions kept me fascinated as I concluded most certainly that siblings play crucial roles in our own development as budding individuals. Just a friendly bystander in her marvelous pint-sized world, I witnessed powerful traits emerging from hardly-two-year-old Kaylee in the form of sensitivity, selflessness and slowly brewing empathy. See, lucky few big sisters are able to grow and learn from a tag-a-along sibling so charming and amusing as a wee brother; it’s a beautiful privilege.

Nine years ago, come September, my sister and I were gifted the most perfect companion brother; it’s become evident since our introduction nearly a decade ago that in some mysterious way this tiny boyish wonder is my superhero as Cameron will likely be to his big sister. There truly is nothing in comparison to the bond shared between a sister and her brother; there is no better a passenger soul mate to have.

Luckily our next session will be free of the blistering summer sun, which regrettably cut our first visit short. Thank you so much for allowing me to photograph your beautiful babies, Meeker family. It was an honor meeting you and getting to know Kaylee and Cameron.
