Unadorned.

Clients are never usually hesitant to ask for our opinion on their thoughts or ideas. Commonly, they reference previous sessions as their springboard; either locations peak their interest, clothing concepts set their itchy feet in motion or sweet poses inspire their curiosity. Sam was refreshing, equipped with an array of unique ideas and an outside-the-lines mentality. Yet she came to me with a timid request for images that featured more … “intimacy”.

So I scoured the internet’s woven webs of information, hoping to pinpoint ways in which I could make her shoot different from our previous maternity sessions. Mostly, I was learning of the significance of such portraiture which differed from the more engagement-styled images that most maternity photos seem to adopt. I pondered, hoping to alleviate her bashfulness on how to approach the subject we had never shot and in hindsight, help her express what she ideally wanted. I soon understood that most intimate, pregnancy snapshots were essentially boudoir photographs at first appearance.

Consequently, we decisively aspired to use Miguel and Samantha’s home as the backdrop to their delicate scene. Filling the air with sweet Pandora tunes we readied our ideal locations searching for their dwelling’s soft and beautifully inviting pockets. Sam and I had mutually agreed upon the absence of vibrant and accessorized threads, a basis for what seems to be ideal in all of Solislux’s images, instead opting for unadorned skin.

Maternity photos taken on a more intimate level bring to light the serenity and devotion shared between Sam and her husband, the soon-to-be parents to a [I am sure] beautiful baby boy. I used a hybrid form of traditional and informal techniques to first capture those images that were important to them and then utilized that unconventional, photojournalistic style Solislux is known for.

No doubt, it was in these tender moments when I witnessed the connection felt between this charming couple only to realize then why they chose this alternative approach at documenting their pregnancy. Here the emphasis was placed on touch and connection with a simple environment. This powerful little miracle illuminated the delicate, peaceful ambiance with nothing more than the love shared among Samantha and her doting husband.

There were no outside elements to steal your focus but only an organic scene much like that in which perfect little Mac will be brought into. The imagery created was comfortable and raw, documenting not only the months before Mac’s arrival but this wonderful family’s home, a crucial element in their future growth as a family.

I truly cherish the distinctive spirit of these photographs and am inspired to continue collaboration as is routine for Ashley and me, with our prospective clients. I greatly appreciate Miguel and Samantha’s warm and welcoming dispositions. Thank you, Sam for encouraging me to shift my perspective and beckoning me with your ideas into uncharted territory.
